Good Psychology Reads: “Let’s Pretend This Never Happened” and “Furiously Happy”

January 15, 2018 by Dr Jennifer Hartman

There’s nothing quite like reading an author who really, really gets it. And if you’ve ever struggled with depression or anxiety, writer Jenny Lawson really, really gets it. She has made a living writing about her personal life with a great deal of emphasis on navigating life with mental illness. Her writing style is a clever mix of unflinching honesty, nimble wit, charming self-deprecation, and keen observations about the vicissitudes of life. Lawson is always willing to share the strange stories from her own life in order to help her readers feel better about theirs.

Lawson regularly posts about her life on her blog, “The Bloggess.” http://thebloggess.com. She’s also written two New York Times #1 bestselling books: “Let’s Pretend This Never Happened” and “Furiously Happy.” I really enjoyed reading her books and highly recommend them. They are both chock full of interesting stories, some that are laugh-out-loud hysterical, some that are painfully sad, and many that are all of the above. Woven throughout, Lawson delivers wonderful nuggets of wisdom and precious compassion for anyone who has struggled with mental illness like she has. Her writing is not for the faint of heart, however, as she frequently punctuates her story-telling with coarse language and blunt phrasing. Jenny Lawson is masterful at keeping it real. Enjoy, and be prepared to laugh so hard that it makes you cry.

Good reading,

Dr. Jen

P.S. I’m including links to Jenny Lawson’s books on amazon.com because that’s the easiest way to show them. Book links to amazon.com are offered for informational purposes only; I do not receive any benefits or compensation from authors of the books or from amazon.com.
